Gurpurab Guru Nanak Dev Ji is the most sacred festival for Sikhs worldwide, commemorating the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji (1469-1539), the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. Celebrated in November on the full moon day (Pooranmashi) according to the lunar calendar, this festival holds special significance in Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The celebration spans three days and attracts thousands of devotees from around the globe who come to pay homage at Gurdwara Janam Asthan.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji's teachings form the foundation of Sikhism, emphasizing the oneness of God (Ik Onkar), equality of all humans, honest living, sharing with others, and serving humanity. His revolutionary message of universal brotherhood transcended caste, creed, and religious boundaries. Guru Nanak traveled extensively (Udasis) spreading his message of love, compassion, and devotion to the Divine. His three core principles - Naam Japna (meditation on God's name), Kirat Karni (honest living), and Vand Chakna (sharing with others) - continue to guide Sikhs today.
The celebration begins three days before Gurpurab with Akhand Path (continuous 48-hour reading of Guru Granth Sahib). The day before Gurpurab, a grand Nagar Kirtan procession is organized with Panj Pyare leading the Guru Granth Sahib on a decorated float. On Gurpurab day, celebrations start early morning (around 4-5 AM) with Asa-di-Var (morning hymns) followed by kirtan, special lectures on Guru Nanak's life and teachings, and the distribution of Karah Prasad. Langar (community kitchen) serves free meals to all visitors regardless of religion or background, embodying Guru Nanak's principles of equality and service.
