About Vaisakhi

Vaisakhi, also known as Baisakhi, is one of the most significant festivals in Sikhism, celebrated on April 13th or 14th each year. This sacred day marks two major events: the harvest festival of Punjab and, more importantly, the establishment of the Khalsa Panth by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1699. On this historic day at Anandpur Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh Ji initiated the Panj Pyare (Five Beloved Ones) and gave Sikhs their distinct identity, including the Five Ks (Kesh, Kangha, Kara, Kirpan, and Kachera).

Historical & Spiritual Significance

Vaisakhi represents the birth of the Khalsa, the collective body of initiated Sikhs who commit to upholding the highest Sikh virtues and serving humanity. Guru Gobind Singh Ji's creation of the Khalsa transformed the Sikh community into saint-soldiers dedicated to protecting the oppressed and standing against injustice. The festival also coincides with the spring harvest in Punjab, symbolizing prosperity and new beginnings. It is a day when many Sikhs choose to get baptized (Amrit Sanchar ceremony) and renew their commitment to Sikh principles.

How It's Celebrated

Vaisakhi celebrations begin with early morning prayers and special services at Gurdwaras worldwide. Nagar Kirtan (religious processions) featuring the Guru Granth Sahib are organized through streets with devotional music, martial arts displays, and free food distribution (Langar). In Nankana Sahib and other Pakistani Gurdwaras, special congregations are held with elaborate decorations, continuous kirtan, and Amrit Sanchar ceremonies. The festival is marked by vibrant gatherings, traditional Punjabi folk music and dance, and the spirit of community service.
